Rep. Ted Lieu Absolutely Roasted Candace Owens With Her Own Stupid Thoughts on Hitler

Today, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing that was supposed to address the rise of hate crimes sparked by white nationalist rhetoric in the last three years. As is longstanding congressional tradition, the minority party — in this case the Republicans — have the right to schedule witnesses as well, so as to make sure all sides of an issue are heard. So who, in their infinite wisdom, did the Republicans on the committee select?

None other than Hitler apologist, Turning Point USA’s token black voice, Candace Owens. Why label Candy a Hitler apologist? Because she is one, quite famously so. I wrote about it here on this site a couple months ago. In that piece, I quoted a Buzzfeed accounting of Owens’ ham fisted attempt to sound smart when she was asked about why she’s a nationalist, considering some of the worst people in history have chosen that label, including Adolf Hitler.

Candace’s answer was laughable, tragic, and extremely viral. In case you don’t remember, here’s what she said about Hitler.

“I actually don’t have any problems at all with the word ‘nationalism’,” Owens said. “I think that the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don’t want… Whenever we say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler.”

“He was a national socialist,” she continued. “But if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine. The problem is that he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalise. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way. To me, that’s not nationalism. In thinking about how we could go bad down the line, I don’t really have an issue with nationalism. I really don’t.” (BuzzFeed)

Let me make it crystal clear: Candace Owens defended Hitler. She can pretend she didn’t. She can claim the full context of her comments weren’t that Hitler was great, but that’s not even what she’s being accused of doing when she made those idiotic comments.  And in fact today, in the congressional hearing she was invited to by the Republicans because they clearly don’t really take the rise of white nationalist-inspired terrorism all that seriously, she tried to deny that’s what she was doing.

Rep. Ted Lieu of California is thankfully on the House Judiciary Committee, and he brought receipts of Candy’s dumbness with him. Lieu played the video of Candace’s Hitler apologia for everyone in the hearing, and indeed the world. He even told everyone he was just going to play the first 30 seconds, so why Owens and her supporters think she destroyed Lieu with her defensive response and calling him a “coward” is beyond me.

Lending himself even more credibility, Congressman Lieu actually shared Owens’ full answer. Even though she tried to reprimand him and attack him, Lieu had the intellectual honesty to post her full answer, and let the public decide.

What’s mind boggling to me is that people like Candace Owens think there’s some kind of intellectual needle to thread with Hitler. He was shitty, and all his ideas were shitty. I mean, maybe he invented avocado toast, but if he did you better believe I’d stop eating it. But for Candace to claim that she was defending the idea of nationalism, not Hitler, is just as stupid as outright defending the Third Reich would be.

Nationalism is bad. It has proven itself bad throughout history. Nationalism has been as the excuse for countless wars and human rights atrocities. Nationalism under the banner of “Manifest Destiny” expanded our grip on the continent at the expense of the native population. Nationalism was the fuel of Mussolini’s fascist regime, and yes, his buddy Adolf was indeed a nationalist. If the right gets to constantly remind people that Nazis were socialists because their name contained the word “socialist,” then indeed nationalists can’t sit and deny that “Nationalist Socialist” has two words in it.

The bottom line is that one shouldn’t be trying to add nuance to a discussion of Hitler. I mean, sure, go ahead, but you’re going to look like a jackass. You can’t not judge Hitler’s nationalism because his nationalism was one of his tools of genocide. Candace Owens is a moron, but I have to wonder who the morons are that invited her to speak at a hearing about white nationalism. Never mind, I know who those morons are. They’re the ones who want us to believe that tax cuts for the wealthy trickle down, Iraq had WMD, and that a document that totally exonerates the president should be kept away from the public because, um, I guess it’s TOO exonerating? I don’t know.

I do know this though: Candace Owens is a fucking idiot. Hitler was a nationalist. Candace Owens defended Hitler’s nationalism. And now she’s upset that a congressman dared to play her own words back to her. Because, to reiterate…

…Candace Owens is a fucking idiot.
